Breast Implant Illness (BII) & Explant Surgery

Understanding your symptoms, your options, and your next steps

A Personal Message from M. Ryan Khosravi, MD, FACS

Science is the foundation of modern medicine, but medical knowledge continues to evolve. When a patient comes to me with symptoms she believes may be related to her breast implants, my first responsibility is to listen, take her concerns seriously, and make sure that other potential medical causes are appropriately evaluated.

If that evaluation does not identify another explanation and, after an informed discussion, she decides that removing her implants is the right choice for her, I respect that decision.

Ultimately, it is your body and your decision.

My role is not to convince you to keep your implants or to remove them. My role is to provide honest medical guidance, discuss the benefits and limitations of the available options, perform surgery safely when appropriate, and support you in making the decision that is right for you.

Understanding Breast Implant Illness (BII)

Breast Implant Illness, commonly referred to as BII, is a term used by patients and clinicians to describe a range of systemic symptoms that some women report after receiving breast implants.

Reported symptoms can include fatigue, difficulty concentrating or “brain fog,” joint and muscle pain, changes in mood, hair loss, sleep disturbance, and other symptoms. These concerns have been reported with both saline and silicone implants and may develop soon after implantation or years later.

At this time, BII is not a formal medical diagnosis, and there is no single diagnostic test or established set of criteria that can determine whether breast implants are the cause of a patient's symptoms. This is why a thoughtful medical evaluation is important before assuming that an implant is responsible.
